Friday Free Plug-in – Native Instruments Reaktor 6 Player

Native Instruments Reaktor is, famously, a complete virtual modular synth construction set. It began as one of the first truly viable virtual analog synths in the mid-1990s (though Seer Systems Reality, developed by none other than Dave Smith, is generally credited as the first).

Reaktor 6 Player may not provide as much extensive ability to create your own instruments, but it amounts to an easy-to-use DSP lab that’s an ideal introduction to modular synthesis – all without investing in a single piece of hardware. Think of it as a “lite” version of Reaktor, though that’s something of a term of art, as you could take months to exhaust what Reaktor 6 Player offers.

From NI’s site: “You also get the free Reaktor Factory Selection, which features more than 400 presets for four powerful VST instruments: Lazerbass, Space Drone, Carbon 2, and Newscool. Simply load an instrument and start playing.”

In addition, it powers the free (but separately downloaded) Blocks Wired and Mikro Prism soft synths. Reaktor 6 Player is likely the most software synthesis power that can be had for a price of $0.00. To get it, hit NI’s download and info page here.

Friday Free Plug-In – U-he Tyrell N6

For this Friday’s freebie plug-in were taking you back to a not-so-oldie but definitely goodie! And not merely because we can’t resist anything that makes a Blade Runner reference. The Tyrell N6 was originally conceived as a hardware synth, whose features would be crowdsourced by the German synth community Amazona.de. The design was essentially to be a sort of Juno on steroids, but the challenges of getting hardware out the door in anything like a timely fashion proved daunting.

Enter Urs Heckmann, founder of U-he, and generally considered one of the most genius designers of software synths in the world. In particular, his products are known for sounding very authentically analog. He coded all the concepts brought forth from Amazona as a freeware soft synth, and though its most recent iteration is 2013, you wouldn’t know that to listen to it. It’s also one of the few free soft synths available for Mac or Windows, as usually freeware developers only have time to focus on one or the other.

Friday Free Plug-In — Vintage Simply String 2

This Friday’s featured free instrument plug-in is Vintage Simply String 2 from RDG Audio. As you can see from the screenshot above of the user interface, this is a very simple plug-in dedicated to classic analog string machine sounds, but heavily inspired by such sounds generated with Moog synthesizers. There are two main vintage synth-string sounds.

It works in all the major plug-in formats on both Mac and Windows, and its system requirements are very modest indeed. Check out the audio demo below and you’ll be as surprised as we were at how lush and rich this free plug-in sounds.

To get more info and download Vintage Simply String 2, and make a donation if you’re so inclined (we encourage you to – shops like this are tiny and every penny helps them make more cool stuff), visit the product page at RDG Audio.

Thick, analog-sounding strings with which to weave your dreams of electric sheep? For free? Thank goodness it’s Friday.
