The State of DAW Editing with the Microsoft Surface Pen

Microsoft Surface devices — the Surface Pro tablets, Surface Book, Surface Laptop, and Surface Studio desktop computer — have offered a compelling user experience that combines the touchscreen interaction of a mobile device with the power and software ecosystem of a full-blown desktop OS, i.e. Windows 10. This has been enough to win some creatives over from the Macintosh and iOS platforms.

The argument is particularly compelling for musical creatives, as the Surface Pen accessory can, with the right software running, edit scores on a traditional staff, draw in and edit MIDI and automation right on a DAW track, and more.

In the following article for the non-profit MIDI Association (formerly known as the MIDI Manufacturers’ Association), Robin Vincent of Surface Pro Audio goes over the state of Surface Pen implementation with various industry-standard recording software, including Avid Pro Tools, Steinberg Cubase, and PreSonus Studio One.

Having just purchased a new 10.5″ iPad Pro myself, after watching this I’m trying to keep my buyer’s regret in check until I see what iOS 11 in combination with an Apple Pencil deliver this coming fall. – SF
