If you have been following this series of articles you will know that Ive been moving house and moving my studio to a purpose built studio in my back garden. During the month of November, we had a leak at DWB studios which meant that the studios have been out of action for me since December. As I type, the workmen are in stripping out the floors and laying new ones ready for the studio to be back in action in a few weeks time. Although I have been out of action this time off has given me time to reflect on future plans for my business and also look at how I was going to be setting up my new studio. I’m going to based permanently here in my home studio as I can spend more time with my family.
Let There Be Light
A lot of studios are completely windowless. This just seems to be the way it is. But to be honest – I never realised how much better you feel working with complete natural light. Compared to my last studio location, this new studio has a ton of natural light, and it just seems to make you feel more at ease & creative when working

Vocal Booth – Or Lack Thereof
In My old studio, I had a dedicated vocal booth. This time I’m not going to have a vocal booth as I intend to record in the control room. I do love vocal booths for isolation, but sometimes you feel removed from the vocalist. I have recorded at many studios without vocal booths, the interaction that you have with the person in the same room can and has resulted in better performance on many occasions. I must say that this has worked better with more accomplished vocalists as they tend not to feel so inhibited.
The Cull
Over my time as a producer, I have purchased a ton of gear, some I use on a daily basis, and some rarely gets used at all. So Ive decided that I’m going to have a cull and really attempt to streamline my workflow and equipment choices. So keep an eye on ebay as there’s going to be some bargains coming up.
So – Everything is wired up – but why is it when you pack down your studio and set it up again, you end up with tons of leads left over that you have no idea where they go?
