Video – Using The Brainworx Opto Pedal Plugin On a Bass Guitar

In this free video tutorial, Paul Drew demonstrates how to use the fantastic Plugin Alliance Opto Pedal Compressor Plug-in on a Bass guitar.

The bx_opto Pedal is a slimmed-down version of the bx_opto. It provides a great way to get that charismatic compression of the bx_opto with a simpler interface, lower price tag, and guitar pedal feel.

In addition to providing tone-laden compression, the bx_opto Pedal doubles as a gain pedal. By dialing-in the Density and Level Trim controls, you can add that little extra taste of gain and color that’s needed.

Most optical compressors are appreciated for their musical, program dependent character produced by the light dependent circuitry of the sidechain. They allow users the ability to adjust the effect of this character by introducing a separate resistance circuit that gives some control over the compression envelope.

Brainworx decided to take a different approach to adjusting this compression envelope when modeling the bx_opto and bx_opto Pedal. The modelled physical constant of the Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) was influenced by those of very real compressors, but there is no separate envelope circuit. Rather, the constant is directly manipulated by the ‘Speed’ parameter of the plugin. This introduces a whole different approach to sonic character that is impossible to replicate with a ‘real-world’ optical compressor.

Video – Using The Brainworx RockRack On Guitars

In this free video tutorial, Paul Drew demonstrates how to use the fantastic Plugin Alliance BX RockRack guitar amp plug-in.

The Brainworx development team, are well known for their 1:1 emulations of even the most expensive hi-end audio gear, and they have taken a new approach on guitar amp plugins. Most amp sims out there model 112 amps and 256 microphones, and then you can tweak them as long as you want and perhaps you still don’t get the sound you are looking for.

Plugin Alliance have chosen t0 give you a handful of perfectly modelled tube-amps, and they have captured complete recording chains in some of the best equipped studios with the help of very experienced engineers. All you need to do is select your favourite speaker, choose your amp, tweak the gain and EQ settings, and there you go.

Sphere Real 3D Mic Modelling Technology Announced

Townend Sphere L22TM

There’s a new company Townsend Labs who have announced what they claim to be ‘real 3D mic modelling.’The two people behind it have a good track record they are Chris Townsend and Erik Papp.

Chris Townsend was previously Guitar Products Architect at Avid Technology and one of the people behind the Eleven Rack.

Erik Papp was CEO of Summit Audio for over 10 years before they were acquired in 2011. He also spent some time working with Blue microphones.

In the comments at Pro Tools Expert one person has said this about the new mic modeling system;

The Sphere L22TM microphone system from Townsend Labs models the characteristics of the most sought-after large-diaphragm condenser microphones with amazing accuracy, and allows selection of different mics and patterns even after tracking.

The SphereTM system consists of an extremely high precision dual channel microphone, which when paired with the included SphereTM DSP plug-in (UAD, VST, AU, AAX Native) accurately models the response of a wide range of mics, including transient response, harmonics, proximity effect and three-dimensional polar response.

Now You Can:

  • Record with the sound of microphones many have only dreamt about
  • Change mic type, polar pattern, and other microphone characteristics, even after tracking!
  • Audition the sound of different microphones without tiring the vocalist
  • Reduce bleed, undesirable room coloration, and other common issues using Off-Axis CorrectionTM
  • Record in stereo from a single microphone
